Endometriosis Symptoms
Recognizing the signs of endometriosis for early diagnosis and treatment.
Common Symptoms
🩸 Painful Periods (Dysmenorrhea)
Severe menstrual cramps that are significantly worse than normal period pain. The pain often starts before menstruation and extends several days into the period. It may worsen over time and can be debilitating.
- • Pain may radiate to lower back and thighs
- • Often requires strong pain medication
- • May interfere with daily activities
💔 Chronic Pelvic Pain
Persistent pain in the lower abdomen and pelvis that may occur throughout the menstrual cycle, not just during periods. Can be constant or intermittent.
- • Dull, aching pain or sharp, stabbing sensations
- • May worsen with physical activity
- • Can affect quality of life significantly
😣 Pain During or After Sex (Dyspareunia)
Deep pain during or after sexual intercourse, particularly with deep penetration. This can significantly impact intimate relationships.
- • Pain may persist for hours after intercourse
- • Often felt deep in the pelvis
- • Can cause emotional distress and relationship strain
🤰 Infertility
Difficulty getting pregnant. Endometriosis is found in 30-50% of women experiencing infertility. It can affect fertility through multiple mechanisms.
- • Scarring and adhesions blocking fallopian tubes
- • Ovarian cysts affecting egg quality
- • Inflammation disrupting implantation
🩸 Heavy Menstrual Bleeding
Excessive bleeding during periods (menorrhagia) or bleeding between periods. May require frequent pad/tampon changes.
- • Soaking through pads/tampons every 1-2 hours
- • Passing large blood clots
- • Periods lasting longer than 7 days
🚽 Bowel and Bladder Symptoms
Pain during bowel movements or urination, especially during menstruation. May include diarrhea, constipation, bloating, or blood in stool/urine.
- • Painful bowel movements during periods
- • Frequent urination or urgency
- • Rectal bleeding during menstruation
😴 Fatigue
Persistent tiredness and low energy levels, often worsening during menstruation. Can be related to chronic pain, inflammation, and anemia from heavy bleeding.
🤢 Digestive Issues
Nausea, bloating, diarrhea, or constipation, particularly during menstruation. These symptoms can mimic irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
⚠️ Important Note
Some women with endometriosis have no symptoms at all. The severity of symptoms doesn't always correlate with the extent of the disease - mild endometriosis can cause severe pain, while extensive endometriosis may cause little or no pain.
If you experience any of these symptoms, especially severe period pain that interferes with daily life, consult a gynecologist for proper evaluation.
