Dermoid Cysts (Teratomas)

Dermoid cysts are benign tumors that contain tissues such as hair, skin, teeth, or even thyroid tissue. They develop from germ cells and are present from birth but may not be discovered until later in life.

Symptoms

⚠️Often asymptomatic until large
⚠️Pelvic pain or pressure
⚠️Abdominal swelling
⚠️Feeling of fullness
⚠️Pain during intercourse
⚠️Urinary frequency if pressing on bladder
⚠️Risk of ovarian torsion (twisting)

Causes & Risk Factors

🔍Develop from germ cells (egg cells)
🔍Present from birth (congenital)
🔍Contain embryonic tissue
🔍Can grow slowly over years
🔍Exact cause unknown

Diagnosis Methods

Pelvic ultrasound showing mixed echogenicity
CT scan or MRI for detailed imaging
Characteristic appearance on imaging
May show calcifications (teeth, bone)
Blood tests (tumor markers usually normal)
