Ovarian cysts are classified into different types based on their contents, origin, and characteristics. Most are benign and harmless.

Functional Cysts

Follicular Cysts

Most common type. Forms when the follicle doesn't release the egg during ovulation.

  • • Size: Usually 2-3cm
  • • Contents: Clear fluid
  • • Symptoms: Usually none
  • • Resolution: 1-3 months

Corpus Luteum Cysts

Forms when the corpus luteum doesn't dissolve after releasing an egg.

  • • Size: Can grow to 5cm
  • • Contents: Yellow fluid, blood
  • • Symptoms: Mild pain possible
  • • Resolution: Weeks to months

Other Common Types

Dermoid Cysts (Teratomas)

Contain tissue like hair, skin, teeth, or fat. Present from birth but grow slowly over time. Usually benign but may require removal if large.
