What is an Ovarian Cyst?

A complete guide to understanding ovarian cysts

Definition of Ovarian Cyst

An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac that develops in or on the ovary. These cysts are very common and usually harmless, forming as part of the normal menstrual cycle.

Key Fact: Most ovarian cysts are benign (non-cancerous) and disappear on their own within a few months without any treatment.

The ovaries are two small, almond-shaped organs located on either side of the uterus. Each month, during the menstrual cycle, the ovaries produce eggs that mature and are released during ovulation. Cysts can form at various points during this process.

How Ovarian Cysts Form

During Normal Ovulation

Each month, a follicle grows on the ovary containing an egg. When the egg is released during ovulation, the follicle normally dissolves. Sometimes, the follicle doesn't release the egg or doesn't dissolve, forming a cyst.

Hormonal Influence

Hormonal imbalances can cause the ovaries to produce abnormal cysts. These are usually functional cysts related to the menstrual cycle.

Endometriosis

When endometrial tissue grows on the ovaries, it can form cysts called endometriomas or "chocolate cysts" filled with old blood.

Who Gets Ovarian Cysts?

Ovarian cysts can affect women of all ages, but they are most common in women of reproductive age.
