Irregular Periods and PCOD

Understanding the link between PCOD and menstrual irregularities

Why PCOD Causes Irregular Periods

In PCOD, hormonal imbalances disrupt the normal menstrual cycle. The ovaries do not release eggs regularly, leading to infrequent (oligomenorrhea) or absent (amenorrhea) periods.

Without regular ovulation, the uterine lining builds up without being shed, which can increase the risk of endometrial hyperplasia over time.

Types of Irregularity

  • • Fewer than 8 periods per year
  • • Cycles longer than 35 days
  • • Unpredictable cycle lengths
  • • Complete absence of periods

Health Risks

  • • Endometrial hyperplasia
  • • Increased endometrial cancer risk
  • • Fertility difficulties
  • • Hormonal imbalance worsening
