What is PCOD?
Understanding Polycystic Ovarian Disease and its impact on women's health
What is PCOD?
PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease) is a hormonal disorder where the ovaries produce immature or partially mature eggs that develop into cysts. These cysts cause the ovaries to enlarge and produce excess male hormones (androgens), leading to hormonal imbalance and irregular ovulation.
Unlike PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), PCOD is generally considered a milder condition that is often reversible with lifestyle modifications. It is extremely common, affecting approximately 1 in 5 women of reproductive age.
Immature Eggs
Ovaries release immature or partially mature eggs that cannot be fertilized
Hormonal Imbalance
Disrupted levels of LH, FSH, and androgens affect normal ovulation
Cyst Formation
Multiple small cysts develop on the ovaries, visible on ultrasound
Key Facts About PCOD
