Frequently Asked Questions

Will I need thyroid medication after surgery?

If total thyroidectomy is done, you'll need lifelong levothyroxine. For partial thyroidectomy, some patients may not need replacement.

How long is the hospital stay?

Most patients stay 1-2 nights in the hospital. You'll be able to walk the day after surgery.

Will there be a visible scar?

Yes, but the scar is usually small and placed in a natural crease in the neck. It fades significantly over time.

What are the risks of thyroid surgery?

Risks include bleeding, infection, damage to parathyroid glands (causing low calcium), and voice changes (usually temporary).

How soon can I return to normal activities?

Light activities can resume within 1-2 weeks. Avoid heavy lifting for 4-6 weeks. Most people return to work in 2-3 weeks.
