About Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) Biopsy
Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) is a minimally invasive diagnostic procedure performed by Dr. Sanjay Kumar Thakur, Nepal's leading thyroid specialist with Diabetes Fellowship from CMC Vellore and Oncology Fellowship from Royal Marsden Hospital, UK. This gold-standard test investigates thyroid nodules, breast lumps, and lymph node enlargements using ultrasound-guided precision. With over 15 years of experience and 1000+ successful FNA procedures, Dr. Sanjay provides accurate diagnosis with minimal discomfort. The procedure uses a thin needle to extract cells for microscopic examination, helping distinguish benign nodules from cancerous ones, avoiding unnecessary surgeries. Available at GyneNepal, Kathmandu, with same-day appointments and results within 3-5 days. International-standard cytopathology ensures 95%+ diagnostic accuracy.
How to Prepare
- 1Inform Dr. Sanjay about blood-thinning medications (aspirin, warfarin, clopidogrel)
- 2Stop anticoagulants 3-5 days before if medically safe (consult first)
- 3Wear loose clothing with easy neck/chest access
- 4No fasting required for thyroid or lymph node FNA
- 5Bring previous ultrasound reports and thyroid function tests
- 6Arrange transportation if anxious (mild sedation available)
- 7Continue thyroid medications as prescribed
The Procedure
Dr. Sanjay performs ultrasound-guided FNA with precision. The skin is cleaned with antiseptic. Local anesthetic may be applied (optional for most patients). Under real-time ultrasound visualization, a 23-25 gauge needle is inserted into the nodule. Multiple passes (3-5) ensure adequate cell collection. Cells are immediately examined for sample adequacy. The entire procedure is performed in our sterile procedure room. Pressure is applied post-procedure to prevent bleeding. A small bandage is placed.
