White Discharge: Causes & Treatment in Nepal
Vaginal discharge is a normal part of female reproductive health. However, changes in color, consistency, odor, or amount can signal an underlying condition that needs treatment.
What is Normal Discharge?
Normal vaginal discharge is:
- Clear to white in color
- Odorless or mildly scented
- Varies in amount throughout the menstrual cycle (more around ovulation)
- Does not cause itching or burning
Types of Abnormal Discharge
Bacterial Vaginosis (BV): The most common cause of abnormal discharge in Nepal. Characterized by thin, grey-white discharge with a fishy odor, especially after intercourse. Caused by overgrowth of anaerobic bacteria. Treated with metronidazole (oral or vaginal).
Yeast Infection (Candidiasis): Thick, white, cottage cheese-like discharge with intense itching and burning. Caused by Candida albicans overgrowth. Treated with antifungal medication (fluconazole or clotrimazole).
Trichomoniasis: Frothy, yellow-green discharge with a strong odor and vaginal irritation. A sexually transmitted infection treated with metronidazole for both partners.
Cervical Infections: Mucopurulent discharge from the cervix, often caused by chlamydia or gonorrhea. Requires antibiotic treatment and partner notification.
Cervical Polyps: Benign growths on the cervix causing increased discharge or spotting between periods. Removed by a simple outpatient procedure.
When to See a Doctor
Seek medical attention if your discharge:
- Has a strong, unpleasant odor
- Is yellow, green, or grey

- Is accompanied by pelvic pain or fever
- Is unusually heavy or has changed significantly
Diagnosis
Your doctor will perform:
- Pelvic examination
- Vaginal swab for microscopy and culture
- pH testing
- Pap smear if cervical cause is suspected
Prevention
- Wear breathable cotton underwear
- Avoid douching (disrupts natural vaginal flora)
- Practice safe sex
- Maintain good hygiene
- Avoid scented soaps or products in the vaginal area
