Most HPV Infections Have No Symptoms
Most HPV infections cause no symptoms and clear on their own within 1-2 years. Many people never know they have HPV because it often has no symptoms. This is why screening is so important.
When Symptoms Do Occur
When HPV does cause symptoms, they depend on the type of HPV virus:
Low-Risk HPV (Types 6, 11)
Genital Warts
The most common symptom of low-risk HPV is genital warts. These appear as:
- Small bumps or groups of bumps in the genital area
- Can be small or large, raised or flat
- Sometimes shaped like cauliflower
High-Risk HPV (Types 16, 18, etc.)
Usually No Symptoms
High-risk HPV types typically cause no symptoms until they lead to serious health problems:
- Abnormal cervical cells (detected through Pap smear)
- Precancerous changes (no symptoms)
- Cancer symptoms appear only in advanced stages
Symptoms by Location
Genital Warts (Women)
- • On the vulva, vagina, cervix, or around the anus

Genital Warts (Men)

When to See a Doctor
Seek medical attention if you notice:
- Any new bumps or growths in the genital area
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding (between periods, after sex, after menopause)
- Unusual vaginal discharge
- Pelvic pain
- You're due for cervical cancer screening
Why Regular Screening is Essential
Since most HPV infections are silent and detected only through screening, regular cervical cancer screening is crucial:
Pap Smear Test
Detects abnormal cervical cells before they become cancer
HPV Test
Identifies high-risk HPV types that can cause cancer
