Why HPV Testing Matters
Most HPV infections cause no symptoms and are detected only through screening. Regular testing helps detect high-risk HPV and abnormal cell changes before they become cancer.
Types of HPV Tests
Pap Smear (Pap Test)
Detects abnormal cervical cells that could become cancer. Does not test for HPV directly but finds cell changes caused by HPV.
- •Recommended every 3 years for women 21-29
- •Quick, simple procedure during pelvic exam
- •Results available in 1-2 weeks
HPV DNA Test
Detects the presence of high-risk HPV types that can cause cervical cancer. More sensitive than Pap smear alone.
- •Identifies high-risk HPV types (16, 18, others)
- •Can be done alone or with Pap smear (co-testing)
- •Recommended for women 30 and older
Co-Testing (Pap + HPV)
Combines Pap smear and HPV test for maximum protection. Recommended screening method for women 30-65.
- •Most comprehensive screening option
- •Can be done every 5 years if both tests are normal
- •Detects both cell changes and HPV infection
Screening Guidelines by Age
Ages 21-29
Pap smear every 3 years. HPV testing not usually recommended (HPV very common in this age group and usually clears on its own).
Ages 30-65
Choose one: (1) Pap smear every 3 years, (2) HPV test every 5 years, or (3) Co-testing (Pap + HPV) every 5 years (recommended).
Ages 65+
May stop screening if you've had regular normal results. Discuss with your doctor.
Special Cases
More frequent screening if you have HIV, weakened immune system, history of abnormal results, or DES exposure.
What to Expect During Testing
Before the Test
- •Schedule when you're not menstruating
- •Avoid intercourse, douching, or vaginal products 2 days before
- •No special preparation needed
During the Test
- •Takes only 5-10 minutes
- •Pelvic exam with speculum
- •Cells collected from cervix with small brush
- •May feel slight pressure or discomfort
After the Test
- •Resume normal activities immediately
- •May have light spotting
- •Results in 1-2 weeks
Understanding Your Results
Normal Results
No abnormal cells found (Pap) and/or no high-risk HPV detected (HPV test). Continue regular screening as recommended.
Abnormal Pap Results
Abnormal cells found. May need:
- •Repeat testing in 6-12 months
- •HPV test (if not already done)
- •Colposcopy for closer examination
Positive HPV Test
High-risk HPV detected. Next steps depend on:
- •Your age
- •Pap smear results
- •HPV type (16/18 vs others)
