Detect Abnormal Cervical Cells Early — Before They Become Cancer

What is a Pap Smear Test?

A Pap smear (also called a Pap test) is a simple screening procedure that detects abnormal cervical cells before they become cancer. It is the most effective tool for preventing cervical cancer and has saved millions of lives worldwide since its introduction.

Why is Pap Smear Important?

Detects Early Changes

Finds abnormal cervical cells years before they become cancer

Prevents Cancer

Early treatment of abnormal cells prevents cervical cancer from developing

Saves Lives

Regular Pap smears have reduced cervical cancer deaths by over 70%

Quick & Simple

Takes only 5-10 minutes during a routine pelvic exam

How is a Pap Smear Done?

Step 1: Positioning

You lie on an exam table with your feet placed in stirrups (supports).

Step 2: Speculum Insertion

The doctor gently inserts a speculum (a metal or plastic instrument) to open the vaginal walls and view the cervix.

Step 3: Cell Collection

Using a small brush or spatula, the doctor gently collects cells from the surface of the cervix. You may feel slight pressure but it should not be painful.

Step 4: Laboratory Analysis

The cells are preserved and sent to a laboratory for examination under a microscope. Results typically come back in 1-2 weeks.

When to Get a Pap Smear

Age 21-29

Pap smear every 3 years. HPV testing is not usually recommended at this age.

Age 30-65

Pap smear every 3 years OR HPV test every 5 years OR co-testing (Pap + HPV) every 5 years.

After Age 65

May stop screening if you've had regular normal results. Discuss with your doctor.

Special Cases

More frequent screening if you have HIV, weakened immune system, or history of abnormal results.

Understanding Pap Smear Results

Normal (Negative)

No abnormal cells found. Continue regular screening as recommended by your doctor.

Abnormal (Positive)

Abnormal cells detected. This does NOT mean you have cancer. Further testing is needed:

  • HPV test to check for high-risk HPV
  • Colposcopy (magnified examination of the cervix)
  • Biopsy if needed

ASC-US (Atypical Cells of Undetermined Significance)

Slightly abnormal cells that may be caused by HPV or other factors. Usually followed up with HPV testing.
