MRI for Ovarian Cysts

Advanced imaging for detailed evaluation of complex ovarian cysts

What is an MRI Scan?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of organs and tissues in the body.

For ovarian cysts, MRI provides superior soft tissue contrast compared to ultrasound. It is particularly useful for characterizing complex cysts, identifying the cyst type, and helping distinguish benign from potentially malignant cysts.

Key Fact: MRI is not a routine test for all ovarian cysts. It is reserved for complex cysts where ultrasound results are inconclusive or when malignancy is suspected.

When is MRI Recommended?

Complex Cysts

Cysts with septations, solid components, papillary projections, or irregular walls on ultrasound.

Indeterminate Ultrasound Findings

When ultrasound cannot clearly characterize the cyst or distinguish between cyst types.

Pre-surgical Planning

Provides detailed anatomy to guide surgical approach, especially for large or complex cysts.

High-Risk Patients

Postmenopausal women or those with elevated CA-125 and concerning ultrasound features.

MRI vs Ultrasound for Ovarian Cysts

Ultrasound

  • • First-line imaging test
  • • Quick and affordable
  • • Good for initial detection
  • • Identifies simple vs complex cysts
  • • No radiation, widely available

MRI

  • • Superior tissue characterization
  • • Better for complex cysts
  • • More expensive
  • • Takes longer (30-45 min)
  • • Provides surgical roadmap

How to Prepare for an MRI

  • • No special preparation required in most cases
  • • Remove all metal objects (jewelry, watches, hairpins)
  • • Inform your doctor if you have any metal implants, pacemaker, or cochlear implants
  • • You may be asked to fast for 4-6 hours if contrast dye will be used
  • • Wear comfortable clothing without metal zippers or buttons

MRI Cost in Kathmandu

  • Pelvic MRI without Contrast: NPR 8,000 - 12,000
  • Pelvic MRI with Contrast: NPR 12,000 - 18,000
  • * Costs may vary by facility. MRI is performed at affiliated radiology centers in Kathmandu.
