PCOS Diagnosis in Kathmandu

How PCOS is Diagnosed: Tests, Criteria, and What to Expect

The Rotterdam Criteria

PCOS is diagnosed using the Rotterdam criteria, which requires at least 2 out of 3 features to be present. This internationally recognized standard ensures accurate diagnosis.

1

Irregular or Absent Ovulation

Infrequent, irregular, or absent menstrual periods indicating ovulation is not occurring regularly.

2

High Androgen Levels

Elevated male hormones detected through blood tests or physical signs like excess hair growth and acne.

3

Polycystic Ovaries

Ultrasound showing 12 or more follicles in each ovary or increased ovarian volume.

Note: Other conditions with similar symptoms (thyroid disorders, high prolactin, adrenal disorders) must be ruled out before confirming PCOS.

Diagnostic Tests for PCOS

Your doctor may recommend several tests to confirm PCOS and rule out other conditions:

Hormone Blood Tests

LH, FSH, testosterone, DHEA-S, and SHBG levels help assess hormonal imbalance.

Insulin & Glucose Tests

Fasting glucose, insulin levels, and HbA1c to check for insulin resistance.

Pelvic Ultrasound

Transvaginal or abdominal ultrasound to visualize ovaries and check for cysts.

Thyroid Function Tests

TSH, T3, T4 to rule out thyroid disorders that can mimic PCOS symptoms.
