PCOS Symptoms
Recognizing the Signs and Indicators of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
Common PCOS Symptoms
PCOS symptoms can vary widely between women. Some may have only mild symptoms, while others experience more severe manifestations. Symptoms often begin around the time of the first menstrual period, but can also develop later.
Irregular Periods
Infrequent, irregular, or prolonged menstrual cycles are the most common sign. You may have fewer than 9 periods a year, or cycles longer than 35 days.
Weight Gain & Obesity
Difficulty losing weight, especially around the abdomen. About 50% of women with PCOS are overweight or obese.
Acne & Oily Skin
Persistent acne on the face, chest, and back that may continue beyond teenage years due to elevated androgen levels.
Excess Hair Growth (Hirsutism)
Dark, coarse hair growth on the face, chest, back, and abdomen affecting about 70% of women with PCOS.
Hair Thinning (Alopecia)
Male-pattern baldness or thinning hair on the scalp, caused by elevated androgen levels affecting hair follicles.
Infertility
PCOS is one of the leading causes of female infertility due to irregular or absent ovulation.
When to See a Doctor
You should consult a gynecologist if you experience any of the following:
- Irregular periods (cycles shorter than 21 days or longer than 35 days)
- Absent periods for 3 or more months
- Difficulty getting pregnant after 6-12 months of trying
- Excess facial or body hair growth with irregular periods
- Severe or persistent acne
PCOS Symptom Variability
Not all women with PCOS experience the same symptoms. Some may have mild symptoms while others face significant health challenges. Symptoms can also change over time and may improve with lifestyle modifications and treatment.
Even if you have few symptoms, PCOS can still affect your long-term health. Regular check-ups and monitoring are important for all women with PCOS.
