Genital Warts Treatment in Kathmandu

Effective Treatment for HPV-Related Genital Warts

Understanding Genital Warts

Genital warts are caused by low-risk HPV types (most commonly HPV 6 and 11). They appear as small bumps or groups of bumps in the genital area. While they do not cause cancer, they can be uncomfortable, unsightly, and may recur after treatment.

Treatment Options

Topical Medications

Prescription creams applied directly to the warts by the patient at home.

  • Imiquimod (Aldara): Boosts immune response to fight the virus
  • Podophyllotoxin: Destroys wart tissue directly
  • Trichloroacetic acid: Applied by doctor to burn off warts
  • Treatment duration: Several weeks to months

Cryotherapy (Freezing)

Liquid nitrogen is used to freeze and destroy the wart tissue.

  • Quick procedure done in clinic
  • May require multiple sessions
  • Minimal discomfort during treatment
  • Effective for most wart types and sizes

Surgical Removal

For large or persistent warts that don't respond to other treatments.

  • Excision: Cutting out the wart under local anesthesia
  • Electrocautery: Burning the wart with electric current
  • Laser treatment: For extensive or hard-to-treat warts
  • Usually single session needed

What to Expect

During Treatment

  • Most treatments are performed in the clinic

  • Procedures typically take 15-30 minutes
  • You can go home the same day

After Treatment

  • Mild discomfort or soreness is normal

  • Continue safe sexual practices

Prevention & Important Notes

HPV Vaccine: Gardasil-9 prevents HPV types 6 and 11, which cause 90% of genital warts. Vaccination is the best prevention.

Not Cancer-Causing: Genital warts are caused by low-risk HPV and do not lead to cancer.

Recurrence: Warts may return even after successful treatment because the virus can remain in the body.

Partner Notification: Inform sexual partners so they can also be evaluated.
