White Discharge Treatment in Nepal

Unusual vaginal discharge is one of the most common reasons women visit a gynecologist. Dr Rashmi Bastakoti provides accurate diagnosis and targeted treatment for all causes of abnormal discharge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is white discharge normal?

Some vaginal discharge is completely normal — it keeps the vagina clean and healthy. Normal discharge is clear to white, odorless or mildly scented, and varies in amount throughout the menstrual cycle. It increases during ovulation, pregnancy, and sexual arousal. Abnormal discharge is yellow/green, has a strong odor (fishy or foul), causes itching or burning, is unusually heavy, or accompanied by pain. Any significant change from your normal pattern warrants evaluation.

What causes abnormal white discharge?

Common causes include: bacterial vaginosis (fishy odor, thin grayish discharge), yeast infection (thick, white, cottage cheese-like, with itching), trichomoniasis (frothy, yellow-green, sexually transmitted), cervical infections (chlamydia, gonorrhea), cervical polyps, hormonal changes (pregnancy, menopause), forgotten tampon or foreign object, and rarely, cervical or vaginal cancer. The specific cause is determined through examination and testing.

What is bacterial vaginosis and how is it treated?

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is an imbalance of vaginal bacteria where harmful bacteria overgrow. It's the most common vaginal infection in women of reproductive age. Symptoms include: thin grayish-white discharge, fishy odor (especially after sex), and sometimes itching. Treatment is with oral or vaginal antibiotics (metronidazole or clindamycin). BV is not sexually transmitted but sexual activity can trigger it. Recurrence is common — probiotics and avoiding douching may help prevent it.

What is yeast infection and how is it treated?

Vaginal yeast infection (candidiasis) is overgrowth of Candida fungus. Symptoms include: thick white discharge (cottage cheese-like), intense itching, redness, swelling, and pain during intercourse or urination. Risk factors include: antibiotics, pregnancy, diabetes, weakened immunity, and hormonal changes. Treatment options include: antifungal creams (miconazole, clotrimazole), oral fluconazole, or vaginal suppositories. Recurrent yeast infections (4+ per year) need evaluation for underlying causes like diabetes.

How is the cause of abnormal discharge diagnosed?

Diagnosis involves: pelvic examination to visualize the discharge and check for inflammation, vaginal swab for microscopy (wet mount) to identify organisms, pH testing (elevated in BV), whiff test (fishy odor with KOH in BV), and culture or PCR tests for specific infections. If a cervical cause is suspected, Pap smear or colposcopy may be done. We identify the exact cause to provide targeted treatment rather than empiric therapy.

Can white discharge be a sign of STD?

Yes, abnormal discharge can indicate sexually transmitted infections. STIs causing discharge include: trichomoniasis (frothy, yellow-green), chlamydia (often asymptomatic, may have clear discharge), gonorrhea (yellow-green, purulent), and mycoplasma genitalium. If you've had new or multiple partners, STI testing is recommended. We offer confidential testing and treatment for all STIs. Early treatment prevents complications and transmission.

Does white discharge affect fertility?

Normal discharge doesn't affect fertility. However, infections causing abnormal discharge can impact fertility: BV and trichomoniasis increase risk of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), which can damage fallopian tubes; untreated chlamydia/gonorrhea can cause tubal blockage; chronic cervicitis can affect cervical mucus quality. Treating infections promptly protects fertility. If you're trying to conceive, addressing any abnormal discharge is important.

What causes white discharge after menopause?

Postmenopausal discharge can be caused by: vaginal atrophy (thinning of vaginal walls due to low estrogen), infections (BV, yeast), cervical polyps, hormone replacement therapy, and rarely, endometrial or cervical cancer. Any discharge after menopause should be evaluated to rule out serious conditions. Treatment depends on cause — vaginal estrogen for atrophy, antibiotics for infections, or further investigation for concerning findings.

How is white discharge treated during pregnancy?

Increased discharge during pregnancy is normal. However, infections need treatment as they can affect pregnancy. BV and trichomoniasis increase risk of preterm birth and low birth weight. Yeast infections are common in pregnancy due to hormonal changes. Treatment is with pregnancy-safe medications: topical antifungals for yeast, oral or vaginal antibiotics for BV after first trimester. We ensure treatments are safe for you and your baby.

What can I do to prevent abnormal discharge?

Prevention tips include: avoid douching (disrupts natural vaginal balance), wipe from front to back after using toilet, wear cotton underwear and avoid tight clothing, change pads and tampons frequently, avoid scented feminine products, practice safe sex, urinate after intercourse, and maintain good blood sugar control if diabetic. Probiotics may help maintain healthy vaginal flora. If you're prone to recurrent infections, discuss prevention strategies with us.

When should I see a doctor for white discharge?

See a doctor if discharge: has a strong odor (fishy, foul), is yellow, green, or bloody, causes itching, burning, or irritation, is accompanied by pelvic pain or fever, occurs after new sexual contact, doesn't resolve with over-the-counter treatments, or is significantly different from your normal pattern. Also seek care if you have recurrent infections or discharge after menopause. Early evaluation ensures proper diagnosis and treatment.

Is treatment confidential?

Yes, completely. All consultations are private and confidential. Your medical information, test results, and discussions are protected. We understand the sensitive nature of these concerns and maintain strict confidentiality. You can discuss your symptoms and sexual history openly without fear of judgment or disclosure.
